    Communication and Interaction

    Supporting SALT (Speech and Language Therapy) - LCHS

    Speech and language therapists work in partnership with the child, family, and Warren Woods educational staff as well as any other professionals involved in their care, to enable them to reach their communication potential.

    Aims to support SALT.

    • To work closely with the children’s Speech and Language Therapist to manage and understand the child’s communication needs.
    • To deliver individual speech and language communication needs.
    • To provide an embedded total communication approach.
    • To provide a connection between school, parents/carers and specialists working together to achieve targets and goals.

    SULP (Social Understanding of Language Programme)

    The SULP programme is designed to support pupils with communication skills to further develop those skills to underpin qualities which will help them manage school life and learn effectively.

    Aims of the intervention

    • To enhance learner communication.
    • To develop awareness skills and how they can manage them.
    • To develop skills to enable them to be better communicators.

    Lego Therapy

     

    LEGO Therapy is a structured, play-based social skills intervention using LEGO bricks to help children develop communication, social, and emotional skills. It is particularly beneficial for children with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) and other social communication difficulties.

    Aims of the Intervention

    • To help children develop social and communication skills through collaborative play using LEGO bricks. 
    • To improve skills such as turn-taking, sharing, listening and teamwork.
    • To understand the different roles needed to build collaboratively.

    Social, Emotional and Mental Health

    Zippy’s Friends

    Zippy’s Friends is an intervention designed to improve children’s coping skills. Trained staff deliver sessions built around stories about a stick insect (Zippy) and his friends, who are young children. The stories involve issues children might encounter, such as friendship, conflict, change, and difficult feelings. The children discuss the issues raised and play games and do role-play activities about emotions and coping.

    Aims of the intervention

    • To promote the mental health and emotional well – being of young children by increasing their repertoire of coping skills.
    • To stimulate varied and flexible ways of coping with problems in day – to - day life through engaging activities.
    • For the child to develop their own positive coping strategies to deal with problems through engaging activities.

    Sensory and/or Physical

    Supporting Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy - LCHS

    Children’s physiotherapists work in partnership with your child, family and all other professionals from health, education, and social care settings to maximise a child’s physical abilities and independence. 

    Warren Wood works closely with LCHS Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists to provide support and understanding of the child’s physical difficulties.

     

    Aims to support Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

    • To work closely with the Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist to manage the child’s physical needs.
    • To deliver individual Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy programmes.
    • To provide a safe, caring environment in which the child can access specialist equipment to support their physical development.
    • To provide a connection between school, parents/carers and specialists working together to achieve targets and goals.

    Rebound Therapy/Flexi-Bounce

    Rebound Therapy / Flexi-Bounce describes the use of trampolines in providing therapeutic exercise and recreation for people with a wide range of special needs. Participants range from mild to severe physical disabilities and from mild to profound and multiple learning disabilities, including dual sensory impairment and autistic spectrum.

    Aims of the therapy

    • To facilitate movement, promote balance, and to increase or decrease muscle tone.
    • To promote relaxation and sensory integration.
    • To improve fitness and exercise tolerance.
    • To improve communication skills.

    Balanceability

    Balanceability is a unique programme that has been specially designed with child development experts and cycling professionals so that all children have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike. The programme is designed to help children gain the confidence and skills required to ride a pedal bike independently, getting them off to the best start in cycling.

    Aims of the intervention

    • To improve dynamic and static balance.
    • To develop fundamental gross and fine motor skills.
    • To grow in strength, develop new skills and enjoy increased confidence levels in the face of new challenges.

    Taste ‘n’ Tell

    The Taste ‘n’ Tell discovering food programme uses activities to introduce children to different food types through the REAL (Reading, Eating and Learning) system. This is a unique way to teach young children to sample and enjoy healthy food, while promoting communication, reading, and learning the origins of food. Taste ‘n’ Tell’s food sampling, role model characters and rewards provide a fun multi-sensory experience.

    Aims of the Intervention

    • To encourage sampling of four key “healthy” foods groups.
    • To explore foods using a multi-sensory approach.
    • To understand the benefits of healthy eating.
