• Approach: Makaton is embedded throughout the school day, in all subject areas and settings, with staff trained in using signs and symbols to support communication. Visual aids, such as communication boards and symbols, are used to enhance understanding.

2. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

• Purpose: To provide pupils with alternative methods to communicate when speech is not possible or effective.
• Approach: Pupils who require AAC tools use devices or picture-based systems (e.g., PECS, iPads with communication apps) to convey messages. The use of AAC is personalised, ensuring that pupils have access to an appropriate tool that suits their communication needs.

3. Body Language

• Purpose: To support pupils who rely on non-verbal communication methods to express themselves.
• Approach: Staff will interpret body language and other non-verbal cues, such as gestures, eye contact, facial expressions and posture, to support pupil communication. Understanding these cues helps staff respond appropriately and engage with pupils effectively.

4. Intensive Interaction

• Purpose: To foster communication with pupils who have significant communication needs through a highly responsive, person-centred approach.
• Approach: Intensive Interaction sessions focus on developing basic communication skills by mimicking and responding to the pupil’s vocalisations, body movements, or facial expressions. This approach builds trust and encourages interaction, especially for pupils who have the most complex communication needs.

5. Environmental Supports and Visual Aids

• Purpose: To enhance communication and ensure clarity for all pupils, especially those with sensory or cognitive challenges.
• Approach: Clear visual supports, such as schedules, social stories and symbols, are used across the school to reinforce verbal communication and provide structure. These aids ensure that pupils can follow routines, understand expectations and express themselves with clarity.

6. Personalised Communication Plans

• Purpose: To ensure that each pupil’s communication needs are met through individualised strategies.
• Approach: Pupil’s that need it will have a personalised communication plan that is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains relevant and effective. This may include the use of Makaton, AAC, body language interpretation, or other strategies based on the pupil’s specific needs and preferences.
